When I completed my thesis I needed to discriminate between children with specific language impairment (SLI) and their typically developing peers in order to compare results between and within the two groups. To discriminate between groups, we used the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT). I highly recommend it as a good IQ test for children with language impairment. The child does not have to speak or read during the assessment and all instruction is given by modeling correct behavior/actions and pointing at pictures. It can be purchased at this link. It is a bit spendy but a great assessment to differentiate those with low IQ from those with language impairment. This clarification can help SLPs write and address goals that are appropriate to the child. The assessment is appropriate for children 5-0 to 17-11 years old, so most children from K-12.
