Free and Inexpensive CEUs

We all know that keeping up our license can be an expensive business so I thought I would compile a list of some ways to get Continuing Education (CEUs) for free or cheap.

  • NEW!  Mayer-Johnson CEUs. http://www.mayer-johnson.com/training/recorded/ I just found this one on-line.  I have taken classes from them before at a conference but have never done their on-line ones.  Let me know what you think when you try them.  I will probably do at least one next year (when I need more CEUs). Mayer-Johnson is the creator of Boardmaker and DynoVox which are some great resources for ACC devices both electronic and paper based.
  • Super Duper has several on-line opportunities.  Most of their classes are targeted to the pediatric and school populations but I have taken some very good classes from them. They often promote one of their products during the course but they also provide good information.   You do have to have an account with them to participate but it is free.  http://www.superduperinc.com/CEU/courses/default.aspx
  • LinguiSystems also has several on-line opportunities.  Their courses cover a much broader base by including courses both for pediatric and geriatric populations, covering a variety of topics.  I have taken some of their adult population classes and have learned a lot from them.  Again, you do have to have an account but it is free.  http://www.linguisystems.com/ceu
  • If you work with pts who have tracheotomies you may be interested in using a speaking valve with them both for speech.  Passy-Muir has some free course about working with tracheotomized pts.  As with the others you must sign up but it is free. I took a few of their courses when I worked at a SNF because I used their valves. http://www.passy-muir.com/ceu
  • Care2Learn has a free course on Clinical Reasoning at this link  http://www.care2learn.com/hb/clinical-reasoning-fb.aspx
  • Electical Stimulation training is quite expensive and often you have to travel to get it.  When I started doing home health my company wanted me certified to provide electrical stimulation for dysphagia.  I was pregnant at the time and did not want to travel across country to get certified so they signed me up for a course through eSwallow.  By taking their primarily on-line course you become certified and get 2.0 CEUs.  Like I noted above, it is primarily on-line but does require 4 hours of hands on training with a qualified SLP.  It's not free but is definitely the best price I have seen at $279 for the course.   http://www.eswallowusa.com/training.html
  • I have never used speechpathology.com but I know several SLPs who have.  This is a low budget way to get CEUs.  They pro port to have over 500 courses to choose from and you can take as many courses in a year as you want for just $99.  http://www.speechpathology.com/slp-ceus/
I will continue to be on the look out for free/inexpensive opportunities.  Please let me know if you know of other opportunities and if appropriate, I will include them on this blog to help other SLPs out!
